Green New Year’s Resolutions

Battery to Bluffs Trail, San Francisco

Happy 2019 everyone! I hope that you all enjoyed the holiday season. As we set our new goals for 2019, why not add sustainable living into the mix? It might seem like a daunting challenge, but if you chose a reasonable goal, I’m sure that you can achieve it! I’ve listed some green New Year’s resolution ideas below. I tried to list the resolutions more or less by level of difficulty. Choose one that feels right for you!

  • Ditch plastic water bottles. (Buy a water filter and a reusable water bottle instead)
  • Start recycling at home.
  • Start composting at home.
  • Bring your own shopping bags. (Leave reusable bags in the car or your purse)
  • Avoid using plastic straws. (Buy a set of reusable straws or a collapsible straw)
  • Stay away from disposable plates, cups and utensils.
  • Carpool to school or work.
  • Transition away from plastic ziplock baggies, plastic wrap, and/or aluminum foil. (Reusable food wraps and reusable snack baggies make this an easy transition)
  • Spend more time appreciating nature. (hike, cycle, camp, etc.)
  • Bring your lunch to school/work. (You’ll save on food packaging waste)
  • Shop at Farmers’ Markets. (It’s fun and full of local, organic goodies!)
  • Take public transportation to school or work.
  • Grow an herb garden. (If you don’t a backyard, consider a kitchen herb garden)
  • Grow your own fruits and/or vegetables.
  • Buy organic. (Shopping at Farmers’ Markets is the cheapest way to go organic)
  • Volunteer at local cleanup/community garden events.
  • Go paperless. (Opt for electronic bills, receipts, etc)
  • Switch to green beauty brands.
  • Try out meatless Mondays.
  • Shop sustainably when buying clothes. (thrift, buy from sustainable brands, etc.)
  • Become vegetarian or vegan.
  • Prepare your own snacks to avoid packaging. (granola bars, cookies, chips, etc.)
  • Live a zero waste lifestyle.

~My New Goals for 2019~

I have three different New Year’s resolutions that I hope to successfully accomplish this year. Instead of choosing very specific resolutions, I decided to choose three broad goals that encompass many different things.

  1. Love Our Planet
    • This year, I am challenging myself to live more sustainably, participate in volunteer/clean-up events, inspire others to be more eco-friendly and find a job directly related to sustainability!
  2. Love Others
    • We all face individual challenges in life, which is why it’s important that we are always there to support one another. I hope that I can find ways to help everyone from family members to acquaintances!
  3. Love Myself
    • Towards the end of 2018, I actively begin to practice yoga, which has taught me that importance of self-love. This year, I want actively take care of my mind and body. I hope to consistently exercise, eat food that actually fuels my body, spend more time outdoors/reading/writing and relax when I can!
